Did Somebody Say McDonalds?

Well it's been awhile since I posted and I apologize for that. I have been pretty busy with school and battling a serious case of lack of motivation. But I'm back and since we spoke last as I predicted things have taken a bit of a sour turn for the Seminoles. However the Hamburgerler was behind it not the NCAA.
Early saturday morning WR Preston Parker was arrested for a DUI after falling asleep at the drive through for twenty minutes. Personally I think he was just waiting  until Mickey D's began serving Mcgriddles but apparently Tallahassee Police aren't buying it. Then earlier today Bobby Bowden dismissed the dynamic playmaker from the team. The loss of Parker could prove costly but FSU returns plenty of other playmakers at the position.

No word yet from the NCAA regarding the impending sactions from last year's academic scandal.

Maybe Leonard Hamilton should take some notes at the lady Noles game tonight on how to handle end game situations. Hamilton and the men's team let a 3 point lead turn into a 3 point loss in the final 72 seconds of the game last week against North Carolina. The Women's team battled back to defeat Duke in overtime last week. The Lady Noles take on Maryland tonight at 7 in Tallahassee.

  1. What do you think? Should we be recruiting guys that have a lack of character? Should we be recruiting guys with criminal backgrounds (not that Parker had one before). What kind of tolerance should a major D1 program have for a lack of commitment to "team.?"

  2. I think its a tough call. If you don't recruit kids because of character issues then I think you are eliminating an 18 year old kid because of possibly just one mistake. I think coaches need to know what they are getting into when they bring a kid on board because now that kid represents them and the University. I don't think there were a lot of flags about Parker before he came to FSU. If the character issue applies to work ethic then that's a kid you want to stay away from. If it is an off field issue then I think the coaches need to know if they risk it with the kid then they have to be prepared to babysit him while at school and have the seniors know that as well.

  3. How about CJ Mizell? This is a kid who was kicked off of his team in high-school for an off-the-field issue. I just don't see players like this worth the scholarship. It is about far more than a roster spot. When players are getting suspended routinely, kicked off the team or even arrested it is hurting the team's focus, dependability, consistency and in effect (esp. recently) has been costing us more games than it is winning us.

I think Florida State's recruiting is 'just bring in the best athletes.' At some point it can't be enough that 'every other school does it' and we have to raise the standard of character we bring in or we are just going to get more of the same. Crap in....Crap out.

  5. I don't know a whole lot about Mizell but as far as I know he hasnt had any off field issues at Leon. FSU does recruit at least one or two at risk guys a class but they also bring in a lot of talented guys who know how to act like Everette Brown and Myron Rolle (although Myron is overrated on the field). It's just a lot tougher than it seems to project how these kids are going to adjust to so much freedom in college and all the temptations Tallahassee has to offer. I will say this that you seem to always hear about the offensive guys getting trouble off-the field for FSU, so I think that perhaps Mickey Andrews doesn't get enough credit for the way he handles his defensive players.
